LAS CRUCES, N.M — Recently crowned Miss Las Cruces Sarah Richardson voluntarily gave up her title Wednesday after being arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
Richardson is believed to have crashed into a light pole on Sunday forcing the closure of Avenida de Mesilla and Hickory while crews repaired damaged traffic lights.
"I am very sincerely sorry for those that I have let down in this incident," Richardson said in a statement announcing she would resign.
The incident was being looked at by the Miss New Mexico board and the Miss America Pageant.
"My actions are not congruous with the actions of a Miss America candidate, and I realize that at this time I must step back and reflect, prioritize my life and accept the consequences," said Richardson.
First runner-up Taylor Rey will be representing Las Cruces in the Miss New Mexico pageant where she is eligible for a $12,000 if crowned the winner.
