There has been a sharp rise in the number of Americans completing their college education.

Last year, more than 33 percent of Americans ages 25-29 had at least a Bachelor's degree, compared to less than 25 percent in 1995.

The surge follows more than two decades of slow growth in college completion, which caused the United States to fall behind other countries.

Despite the recent improvement, only about half of first-time college freshmen who enrolled in 2006 graduated by 2012.
