The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting that happened in Chaparral Sunday evening.

According to a spokesperson, it started as a domestic dispute at a home in the 700 block of Sunny Sands. A man was critically injured and was airlifted to a hospital in El Paso.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she and her husband heard the gunshot through an open window in their home.

"There was a man screaming for help, "Help! Help!" she said.

With her children sleeping inside, the woman and her husband heard the cries for help and ran outside to find their next door neighbor covered in blood.

"He was standing, holding himself on the gate because he was very badly hurt," she said.

She said a woman told them that she and her husband were having a fight.

"She just kept saying, 'I shot him. I shot him. He stabbed me. Look at my legs! Look at my legs! They're stabbed. I have stab wounds on my legs.'" said the neighbor describing what the woman said.

When deputies arrived, they immediately handcuffed the woman, as she tried to explain what the fight was about.

"When she was walking, arrested, she kept on saying, 'Yes, it's all about jealousy. He kept abusing me. He's an abuser,'" she said.

The neighbor said she has lived in the area for 20 years with her husband. They don't know the couple very well, but said they quickly got the sense that something wasn't right.

"They were on something. She did, she looked like she was on something," she said.

Paramedics took the woman away in an ambulance. The man was airlifted a hospital with critical injuries.
