New City Council discusses ballpark promises

Tuesday, June 25, 2013 - 7:59pm

The debate over whether to have the Triple A ballpark won't seem to end, no matter how concrete plans are.

In council Tuesday, a heated debate was underway as City Representative Eddie Holguin asked City Manager Joyce Wilson to get a personal guarantee from MountianStar Sports Group that said they'll pay the additional $12.1 million dollars they've promised.

Joyce Wilson said she's asked the group for the guarantee three times but they won't give it. A representative from MountainStar was at the meeting and said it's not normal for companies to give cities a personal guarantee.

The rep said the promise to pay is in the contract. Still, Mayor Oscar Leeser asked for a personal favor from the MountainStar spokesperson to go back and ask one more time

"I just want to make sure that the citizens know that we're not trying to undo anything because we're not able to undo anything," Mayor Leeser said. "We're legal and we're bound by these agreements that were made prior to us and we'll respect them and move forward and make sure that we do our best job to make sure that it works out and doesn't cost any money as far as citizens because we're all taxpayers."

The council also voted on a new schedule for their meetings. They'll now start at 8:30 a.m. with ceremonial items, and then they'll start regular business at 9.

They'll go into executive session after that and allow public comment in the afternoon.
