The man who built Nintendo into a global video-gaming empire has died. Hiroshi Yamauchi, passed away in Japan. Yamauchi guided Nintendo from its pre-electronic days as a maker of children's games to its emergence as a the creator of gaming hits like Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers.

Although he wasn't a baseball fan, Yamauchi bought a majority stake in the Seattle Mariners in 1992 to keep the team from moving to Florida.

Ironically, he never saw the Mariners play live. Yamauchi was 85.
