Requires DoD to provide them with medical information upon leaving the military

Congressman Beto O’ Rourke (TX-16) has introduced the Healthy Transitions for Veterans Act, legislation that will require the Department of Defense (DoD) to provide service members with a comprehensive physical examination and an electronic copy of their complete medical records when they leave the service.

“I have the honor of representing 33,000 active duty soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss and nearly 80,000 veterans. For veterans who may apply for VA benefits, having their full medical record from the military will make the application process more efficient,” said Congressman O’Rourke. “Currently service members are not required to have physical examinations when they leave military service. This can result in lack of documentation and long wait times when they file their disability claim with the VA. The Healthy Transitions for Veterans Act will ensure that there is a smoother transition into the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system as DoD and VA struggle to make their systems interoperable.

Our responsibility to these men and women does not end when we bring them home from war. I will continue working to ensure that our service members make a smooth transition back to civilian life.”
