An experimental drug from Pfizer shows promising results in treating advanced breast cancer, according to the pharmaceutical company.
Pfizer studied 165 patients divided into two groups in a small clinical trial. One group was given an existing cancer treatment plus placebo. The other group was given the same drug plus the experimental drug called Palbociclib.
Researchers found the addition of the experimental drug nearly doubled time before the cancer starting growing again. However, women did not live longer, at least not in a statistically significant way. Now researchers will conduct larger clinical trials to see if these results can be replicated.
And Pfizer says it's too soon to tell whether it will have a "statistically significant improvement" on survival.
