CANUTILLO, Texas — The owner of a small pharmacy in Canutillo is sweeping up the pieces and tidying up his shelves after someone broke in and stole narcotics and money.
Each day Mario Lozano goes to work at West Valley Pharmacy.
He cleans, does maintenance and sometimes washes the boss' car.
When he got to work Monday, his boss told him someone had broken in.
They tried to come in through a window, but couldn't.
Then they used something to pierce an iron gate on the front door.
"He told me, man, they just took cough medicine and stuff like that and I said oh man they must have been kids just doing they're little travesuras," said Lozano.
That cough medicine included more than $1,000 worth of hydrocodone and other narcotics, plus about $250 cash.
The Borderland is often associated with drugs, and some say there are plenty of patrons here.
"Whether statistics say otherwise we have a huge drug problem," said Richard Rechy.
The pharmacy's surveillance camera didn't catch the criminal or criminals on tape, but the owner was planning an upgrade anyway.
"I hope he gets it pretty soon because, you know, the way the kids are. These kids are crazy these days," said Lozano.
