WASHINGTON — During a special report Wednesday, President Barack Obama said he would take 23 executive actions to prevent gun violence that do not require congressional approval, including strengthening background checks on gun sales and expanding safety programs in schools.

He also called on Congress to reinstate the ban on military style assault rifles and limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds for all weapons.

In his live broadcast address, he called for public pressure on Congress and the gun lobby to push for stronger steps against gun violence, saying "the only way we can change is if the American people demand it."
