El Paso Diabetes Association partnered with local gyms this afternoon to bring diabetes awareness to the community.
They gathered at the El Paso Coliseum and invited El Pasoans to attend.
They held workshops and focused on educating the community about the benifits of living a healthier lifestyle.
With the holidays in full swing, they felt this was the perfect time to remind the community about making healthier food choices when it comes to the holiday dinner.
Diabetes affects more than 25 million people in the United States with hispanics being more at risk of getting the disease.
"It's very alarming that we are two times at risk to have diabetes and what is more shocking is that 25% of people don't even know it. It's important that people over 40 or people that are obese get their glucose check and overall change their physical activity" said Karina Lujan, El Paso Diabetes Association.
El Paso Diabetes Association is a local and not for profit organization whose mission is to eliminate diabetes and its complications through empowerment, promotion, detection, and access to diabetes services.
