LAS CRUCES, N.M. — With emergency planning taking center stage after the most recent school shooting in Roswell, Mesa Middle School in Las Cruces held their planned school shooter exercise Friday morning.
The idea was for area law enforcement to discuss possible challenges when responding to a shooter on campus.
"Your response is immediate and you already know what to do." said LCPS Safety Security Coordinator Todd Gregory.
The exercise played out various scenarios including injuries to staff and how each agency would respond.
Gregory said they never want to put the plan into action but having it in place will help coordinate efforts.
"Kids, staff and parents know that we're going into lock down," Gregory said. "The kids are going to be at least safe."
Officials said they have monthly meetings to talk about potential situations and they also hold drills at schools to make sure students and teachers respond accordingly if an incident were to occur.
