EL PASO — After dying at his home July 24, arrangements to bury Sherman Hemsley are finally underway.

It was obvious that after three months since his death both parties battling over Sherman Hemsley's estate were ready to hear the final decision as to who had the rights to decide his afterlife.

It comes down to Fort Bliss as the final resting place for the late actor. Judge Patricia Chew told the court Friday that Hemsley's last will and testament naming Flora Echinton Bernal was valid and saw no evidence of forgery in the signature as his family alleged.

Echinton-Bernal was given authority to choose the location of his burial. At the end of the trial she approached his half-brother Richard Thornton to invite him to the service.

"I went up to him and I told him, I said please, do come, let's all join in,” she said. “Let's show Sherman what he really wanted, because this is what sherman was all about: Love."

Echinton-Bernal told Local 4 News that Sherman Hemsley served in the Air Force for four years and had a love for the military, hence the choice for his final resting place. No word yet on the date of his funeral, she only said that it would be "very soon."

Hemsley is best known for his role as George Jefferson in the television series “All in the Family” and the “Jeffersons.”
