EL PASO — Teen parents learned to overcome challenges and create opportunities today.
The Conference for Pregnant Teen Moms and Dads was held today in East El Paso.
The teens learned about positive and loving discipline for their children along with having a healthy relationship and mental health.
The teens were also given information about mental health, prenatal care and nutrition.
Organizers say the event is important since more teens in El Paso get pregnant than the state and national averages.
One teen mom who spoke to the group today, says she learned information from the program two years ago that was useful to her when her baby was born.
"I really hope that they really listen and what the people are saying is true, it is hard when the babies are born and managing to become mom and dad, that's the number one thing for the baby its not what happens between you guys its about your child, so I really hope they really listen to what people are saying, " said 19-year-old Bianca Parks.
"The multiple agencies that have come together and have this event, particularly the staff and management here at the Region 19 Head Start facility, we all have one goal in mind; healthy babies, healthy young ladies and healthy relationships," said conference coordinator Brenda Barbar.
This was the sixth year for the conference.
