EL PASO — More than $40,000 of money orders and checks have been stolen from various apartment complexes throughout the city. Police were asking for your help to catch the thieves.
The thefts happened in early December at apartment complexes in Pebble Hills, West El Paso and the Mission Valley.
Police said the thieves fished out envelopes containing checks for rent from drop-boxes.
"Once they obtained the checks, they would actually alter the pay-to line to different names and cashed using false IDs and other types of false information on there. They were able to go ahead cash many of these now totaling about $40,000," said Javier Sambrano with El Paso Police Department.
Police believe several of the thefts happened during weekends and at night-time hours.
