US and Japan meet on North Korea nuclear threat

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 - 8:15am

Japanese and U.S. officials met in Tokyo Wednesday to discuss the escalating war of words with North Korea.

North Korea said last week that it plans to conduct a new nuclear test and carry out more rocket launches after the U.N. Security Council voted to tighten sanctions on the secretive regime.

Pyongyang didn't say when it intends to carry out the nuclear test, which follows previous underground detonations in 2006 and 2009.

It also threatened "physical counter-measures" against South Korea if it participates in the imposition of the new sanctions.

US Assistant Secretary of Defense Andrew Weber met with Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera to discuss bilateral cooperation in the event of North Korea conducting a third nuclear test.
