The U.S. is stepping up its natural gas exports. The Department of Energy approved a second application last month to export natural gas from a facility along the Gulf Coast that's partly owned by Conocophillips.

This approval came two years after the D.O.E. granted the first natural gas export license to Cheniere energy, which also has a plant on the Gulf Coast.

The two-year gap was the result of the D.O.E. waiting for studies on how gas exports would impact the economy. It turned out the reports all generally said exports would be a good thing.

While many may believe exports will have a net benefit, that opinion is certainly not unanimous.
