Website ranks El Paso #6 worst city to find a job

According to a new list compiled by the website, careerbliss.com, finding a job in El Paso is harder than other cities.

El Paso is the sixth worst city in the United States to find a job.

Alia Henson with CareerBliss.com said several factors contribute to the ranking including overall happiness, trends in unemployment and job availability.

The unemployment numbers come directly from the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, and job availability is compiled from open job data available on a number of employment websites.

El Paso scored a one out of a possible five points in both job availability and unemployment.

The happiness data is also factored into the ranking, and comes from reviews from independent employees who rate how happy they are at their jobs.

Teo Ugalde with Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande in El Paso said although the list is not completely inaccurate, there are several factors to consider.

"The border region presents different dynamic, like the expansion at Ft. Bliss, the influence of more people coming from south of the border, it's a little bit more complex, not as static," said Ugalde.

Ugalde said unemployment rates in El Paso have actually gone down in the past year, and there has been a growth in the number of jobs.

While that may be true, Henson said the numbers show that the unemployment rate in other cities dropped more than in El Paso, and other cities also had higher job growth.

Ugalde said one of the biggest challenges El Paso faces in terms of unemployment, is education.

"Of the people here in El Paso, 25 and older, that have formal college education, if you compare again with Texas and the nation, we're behind in terms of bachelor's degrees. Only 14% of the population has a bachelor's degree compared to 24-25 percent in the nation," said Ugalde.

Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande provides many services to help job-seekers find employment.  They also have programs that provide education, training and childcare.

Many of their services are free.
