It's a bitter sweet week at the El Paso Zoo as a beloved lion is saying farewell to the Sun City. Xerxes is moving to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.
The African lion grew up the zoo, but the lion species survival program is recommending he be moved to Seattle. In exchange a young male lion from that zoo will take his place.
“Here at the zoo Xerxes is housed with three of his sisters, so we can't have any breeding here of course. Xerxes is recommended to move to Seattle where he'll be paired with a lioness that's not related to him so he can actually breed and have a family," said Victoria Milne a zoo veterinarian.
Xerxes will be on display through Tuesday, March 4.
The new lion, Rudo, will move to El Paso later this week. It will be several months though before El Pasoans will actually get to meet him.
