YISD students put on Super Bowl challenge

Friday, February 1, 2013 - 10:28pm

The Super Bowl is approaching. The big game is inspiring some Ysleta Independent School District students to do better in school.

Mesa Vista Elementary School played a Super Bowl of their own on Friday.

For the past several weeks, third to sixth graders played in a tournament leading up to the big game.

Students who have been doing well in their classes were able to participate.
"What we want to build in our students is a sense of expectations as far as what they're expected to do here on campus and not only on campus but also outside of campus. They'll know as far as building good character, what is right, what is wrong, regardless of who is watching them," said Principal Connie Vasquez.

The school also put on a tailgate for students before the game and each child was allowed to wear their favorite team's jersey.

The school plans to have the game every year and it will be played the Friday before the real Super Bowl.
