Senior libero Stephanie Figueroa was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is Figueroa’s third career defensive player of the week honor.
“Stephanie made so many big plays for us this weekend,” said head coach Ken Murphy. “She had a large impact on the outcome of our matches and made plays at important times.”
Figueroa was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational leading the Miners to claim the first-place title as they won four consecutive matches to begin the 2011 campaign. The Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico native posted a tournament-high 71 digs and averaged 5.46 digs per set. She tallied a team-best 19 digs in three of the four victories.
UTEP is back in action Friday, September 2 at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. taking on Niagara at 10 a.m. (MT) and team host Cornell at 5 p.m. The Miners will face American (10 a.m.) and Delaware (3 p.m.) on Sat., September 3.
