The Las Cruces Police Athletic League (PAL) had its first annual “Sam DiPace Memorial Explosion” Saturday night in honor of the late Sam DiPace, a champion trainer within the Las Cruces PAL boxing program who passed away this October.
The event was held at the Sammy Burke Youth Boxing Club in Las Cruces. Fighters from Las Cruces and around the Southwest competed in both male and female age divisions.
In an intermission exhibition match, undefeated WBA world junior middleweight champion Austin Trout got beat up for three rounds against Leroy “the Destroyer” Valdez. Valdez finished off Trout by knocking him out in the 3rd round. Valdez fights out of Deming, New Mexico and is 10-years-old.
Trout, a former Las Cruces PAL boxer who was trained and mentored by the late Sam DiPace, was honored to put on a fun mock show for the crowd in attendance.
When the real boxing resumed Edmund Guzman, 16, of Las Cruces PAL outpointed Julian Rodarte, 16, of Diamente Gym, El Paso TX in the co-main event. In the main event, nine-time national champion Ayanna Vasquez, 17, of Las Cruces PAL outpointed Chasity Funseth of North East Gym of El Paso, TX.
Proceeds from the event go to sponsor young boxers at the Las Cruces PAL gym in honor of the DiPace family.
