The UTEP tennis team will look to send off Carolina DeLuca in style when it battles Abilene Christian on “Senior Day” at 10 a.m. MT at the El Paso Tennis Club Saturday. Admission is free, and there will be a pre-match ceremony honoring DeLuca.
DeLuca is the lone senior on this year’s squad, which makes her role even more important. She has been hindered by injuries and illness at times but has still managed to compile 12 triumphs (five singles, seven doubles).
Overall DeLuca has enjoyed a solid career during her four years with the Orange and Blue. She has registered 78 combined victories in that timeframe (32 singles, 46 doubles). Her effort in doubles has been particularly impressive, with the winning percentage of 53.5 (46-40) placing her 10th in program history.
She started her UTEP career before the christening of the 2009 dual-match season. DeLuca made a big impact on that squad by going 11-7 in singles and 12-5 in doubles play in helping the Miners set the single-season school record for victories (16-7).
DeLuca also reached double figures in triumphs for singles play during the 2009-10 season while achieving it in doubles in both 2009-10 and 2010-11.
DeLuca and the rest of the Miners, however, will have their hands full in taking on Abilene Christian. It is one of the top Division II programs in the country, having advanced to the NCAA Tournament 15 straight years.
The 2011-12 ACU squad is no exception, with it ranking sixth nationally thanks to an overall record of 16-2. The Wildcats are no stranger to facing DI foes, however, with a strong mark of 6-2 this season.
