The New Mexico State men's basketball team hosts Western New Mexico, Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., in the lone exhibition game of the 2012-13 season at the Pan American Center. The game is free and open to the public.
The Aggies return seven players from last year's squad that finished with a 26-10 overall record following a WAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. NM State welcomed five newcomers and three redshirts to the court this season.
Last week, the Aggies were voted to win the WAC Championship in the WAC Coaches' Preseason poll and second in the media poll. Senior forward Tyrone Watson and sophomore guard Daniel Mullings earned Preseason All-WAC honors.
In the previous matchup, the Aggies defeated the Mustangs, 92-65, Dec. 14, 2011 in Las Cruces, to begin a five-game home stand. NM State had four players in double figures. Guard Hernst Laroche and forward Wendell McKines paced the Crimson and White with 18 points each. Center Hamidu Rahman recorded his first double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while center Tshilidzi Nephawe scored 12 points. NM State leads the overall series 62-23-1 in regular-season meetings.
Western New Mexico was 9-17 overall and 9-13 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games in 2011-12. The Mustangs were voted to finish ninth of 14 teams in the preseason polls. Senior forward Chad Carter was a unanimous preseason first team All-RMAC selection.
The Aggies open the regular season at Oregon State, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU, and host Southeastern Louisiana, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. in the home opener.
