The UTEP rifle team fired a season-high 4503, aided by a campaign-best 2299 in the air rifle over two days of competition in a meet with numerous institutions as hosted by The Ohio State University. The Miners shot smallbore on Nov. 10 while competing in air rifle Sunday. TCU had the top sum at 4708 while Nebraska competed twice (4639 & 4642), as did OSU (4609 & 4594) and Nevada (4629 & 4642).
The effort wraps up the fall portion of schedule for UTEP, which will continue to train and progress as a unit to prepare for the second half of its season.
Senior Hannah Muegge led the way with an aggregate total of 1155. That figure is a season high, in addition to tying as her third-best effort during her illustrious career. She fired a season-best and her second-top sum overall in smallbore (573). Muegge stayed zeroed in on the air rifle by registering her finest score (582) this fall and the fifth highest overall while with UTEP.
Sophomore Jennifer Armendariz was not far off Muegge, checking in at 1151. The epitome of consistency in air rifle, Armendariz posted a tally of 583 to push an impressive streak of 580+ to 13 straight matches.
She delivered a score of 568 in the smallbore. Armendariz has been solid in the discipline this fall, with an average of 571.2.
Korina Rodriguez wrapped up the match with an aggregate of 1143, with the score getting a big boost from her showing in the air rifle. The El Paso product fired a total of 581 to eclipse 580 for the initial occasion of the fall and the eighth time overall in her career.
She battled hard in the smallbore on the way to recording a sum of 562. She has been a quality shooter in smallbore this season, evidenced by her average of 566.6.
Junior walk-on Areli Oros rolled to her second-highest aggregate score (1054) of her career. A big part of the overall success was her effort in air rifle. She fired a career-best 553 in the discipline, besting her prior standard by a full three points. She started the weekend with a score of 501 in the smallbore before tightening things up a bit for the air rifle.
