The New Mexico State volleyball team (22-10) was selected to play BYU (26-3) in the first round on the 2012 NCAA Volleyball Tournament as announced on ESPNU, Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies head back the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008 facing No. 12 national seed BYU, which is out of the West Coast Conference, on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. (MT) in Provo, Utah.
"After you've had a taste of it and it's gone for a couple of years, you really miss it," head coach Mike Jordan said. "To be able to get the opportunity for these players, especially because we have so many young players, is a great feeling. The team and staff have worked hard all year and it's great to have this chance again."
NM State is making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance with Jordan leading the way each time. The Aggies are 1-5 all-time in tournament play with their only win coming against St. Mary's College (West Coast Conference) in 2008. NM State was ousted by California in the second round that year falling in four sets.
The Aggies took on BYU in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament falling in straight sets in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
BYU tied for the WCC regular season title with San Diego but won the conference's automatic bid via a tiebreaker. NM State will have a challenge in the first round as the Cougars are 12-0 at home.
BYU is led by Jennifer Hamson who is averaging 4.02 kills per set with a .361 hitting percentage. The Cougars average 2.97 blocks per set with Nicole Warner leading the way at 1.75 blocks per set. The Cougars average 14.64 digs per set led by Ciara Parker (3.53 d/s) and Tia Withers (3.21 d/s).
The winner between NM State and BYU will compete against the winner of the match between Arizona State and Oklahoma. ASU and Oklahoma play Friday at 5 p.m. (MT).
The second round is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. (MT)
