CANUTILLO, TX — Canutillo Independent School District could fire their Superintendent Dr. Damon Murphy. The board of Trustees is expected to talk about his position at a special meeting on Thursday.
Damon Murphy has been the head of the Canutillo ISD since January 2010. But that could soon change.
On Monday, the board of trustees got an update on an internal audit.
"We had a meeting in regards to a consultation with our legal counsel regarding the internal audit progress," said Board President Armando Rodriguez.
The district's new internal auditor has been in place since June and he told the board part of his audit would be presented to them on Thursday.
"Part of his audit plan was to address the issues when it related to transfer credits process, procedures and students cohort," said Rodriguez.
After hearing the report, the board will talk about Murphy's contract and employment with the district.
Murphy has been under fire for his alleged involvement in the El Paso ISD's cheating scandal. He was the associate superintendent for secondary and priority schools at El Paso ISD under Former Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia.
"We can't evaluate him for what happened in El Paso Independent School District. We need to make sure that we evaluate him for what happened in Canutillo Independent School District," said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez said he's confident the board will make the right decision.
"The most important thing is our kids. I believe the board has and will make the best decision what's in the best interest of our kids and our community," said Rodriguez.
Newschannel 9 asked for an interview with Murphy but we were told he's not doing interviews or releasing a statement.
The special meeting is at The Canutillo ISD Administration Building at 7 p.m. Thursday. Everyone is welcome to attend.
