There is every indication Sean Kugler is about to become UTEP's new head Football Coach. He interviewed for the position on Thursday with Athletic Director Bob Stull and apparently accepted the job late Friday. UTEP officials have not confirmed the hiring but several internet web sites report Kugler is UTEP's new coach. Jeff Choate of Washington St., who coached with Kugler at Boise St., is expected to become the Miner's Defensive Coordinator.
As Local 4 reported at 10:00 Friday, Kugler's name was always at the top of Stull's list.
Kugler played for Stull when he was a four year letter winner at UTEP and is presently the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for one season at Boise St.
Kugler is expected to finish the NFL season with Pittsburgh, delaying his official arrival in El Paso.
UTEP has posted seven straight losing seasons and has not won a bowl game since 1966. Stull said he wanted to name a new coach before Christmas but an annoucement should come much sooner.
