One of the most common New Year's resolutions is to get fit, so the Better Business Bureau is offering some advice to help people select a fitness facility that will best meet their needs, without getting ripped off.
In 2012, BBB processed more than 650 complaints against gyms and fitness centers nationwide, most of which focused on contract disputes and billing problems.
Get everything in writing, including verbal promises made by gym salespeople.
Consider your budget. Most facilities charge an up-front membership fee to join and a monthly fee thereafter.
Don't give in to sales pressure -- walk away from clubs that pressure you to sign a contract on the spot.
Review the contract before signing and make sure the contract lists all services and fees.
Ask around. Maybe your friends or family can recommend a facility to use.
