EL PASO — El Paso City Council Tuesday approved the lease of a parking lot owned by Union Pacific Railroad. Located on Mills behind the El Paso Times building, it will provide an additional 134 parking spaces for city employees and guests when city council moves into the Times building next year.
The lease is for 10 years at roughly 60 thousand dollars per year for the new parking. That calculates to about four dollars per space per month. The city reportedly spoke to Union Pacific about buying the lot outright, but says the railroad expressed no interest in doing that.
Along with 250 other city-owned spots nearby, the city now feels it has enough space to accommodate all three buildings it is renovating downtown.
