The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division/Crimes Against Persons Section reported the arrest of two people in connection with the 1977 Murder of Major Chester Garrett.
In January of 1977 Major Garrett, a highly decorated United States Army Officer assigned to Fort Bliss, was found dead in El Paso. The investigation became inactive as all leads were exhausted at the time. In 2006, the Sheriff’s Office resumed the investigation and continued the case developing new information.
On Thursday, detectives traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. with the assistance of the Knoxville Police Department and arrested 54-year-old Roger Evan Garrett for Murder with a $5M bond. Investigators said Roger Evan Garrett was the step-son of Major Garrett. Sheriff’s Detectives also took 74-year-old Lizbeth Ann Garrett, Major Garrett’s estranged wife at the time of the murder, into custody on murder charges.
