UTEP's David Persons shot a one-under-par 143 at the New Mexico Collegiate Cup on Sunday, finishing first out of a field of 28 golfers.
Persons, an El Paso native and Franklin High School graduate, fired rounds of 69 and 74 at the 36-hole tournament in Truth or Consequences.
UTEP sent seven other golfers to the tournament. Ryan Fioretti (76-75-151) and Jose Romero (75-76-151) tied for eighth place, Roberto Ruiz (76-76-152) and Ian Patterson (78-74-152) tied for 11th place, Jerry Castrellon finished 13th (78-75-153), Ross Rotwein tied for 14th place (80-75-155) and Jacob Loya tied for 20th place (74-82-156).
The field also included competitors from New Mexico, New Mexico Military Institute, Northern New Mexico College and Western New Mexico. No team scores were kept.
UTEP's next tournament will be the John Burns Intercollegiate Feb. 20-22 in Kahuku, Hawaii.
