The UTEP tennis team has a big test coming up Friday morning in Lubbock. The Miners (8-7) will take on the No. 20 Lady Raiders (10-4) at 9 a.m. MT at the McLeod Tennis Center.
First-year head coach Mark Roberts’ squad will take on a team who has won 13 straight home matches and just came off a 6-1 victory over No. 28 Oklahoma on March 17 inLubbock.
“We are looking forward to playing a highly ranked Texas Tech team,” said Roberts. “This weekend will be three matches in two days so we have a lot of tennis ahead of us and we are looking forward to competing hard.”
UTEP lost a close match to NM State, 4-3, on March 15. The Miners won all three doubles matches to gain the doubles point, but lost four of six singles matches.
Junior RebecaCalvillo has played exceptionally well in singles competition as she has compiled a 13-2 dual match record, including a 9-0 mark at the No. 1 spot. Juniors Gabi Vazquez and Marie LeBlond have won 10 matches each, while senior Martina Trierweiler has been victorious eight times.
LeBlond and Vazquez have teamed to post a 11-3 doubles record at No. 2, while Calvillo and Trierweiler are 8-6 at No. 1.
The Lady Raiders have produced some of the top talent in the nation. Kenna Kilgo is ranked No. 118 in singles play, while Elizabeth Ullathorne has a team-best 10-2 record in dual match play.
Sammantha Adams and Kilgo are ranked No. 34 in doubles competition in which they are 10-3 at the No. 1 spot. Caroline Starck and Elizabeth Ullathorne are an impressive 11-1 at the No. 3 spot. Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde, who are ranked No. 61, are 9-4 at the No. 2 spot.
