EL PASO — Should El Paso taxpayers pick up the tab for legal fees that Mayor John Cook racked up while fighting a recall effort?
That's a debate that city council will take up next week.
Mayor Cook argues he's entitled to more than a half million dollars from the city because the city gave him bad legal advice.
A recall group tried to have cook and two city reps removed after they voted to restore health benefits for gay and unmarried partners of city employees.
The 8th Court of Appeals ultimately ruled the recall group violated law by circulating petitions in churches.
Cook says he still owes almost $580,000 in legal bills.
