Three home runs and eight hits led the New Mexico State softball team to an 8-0 win in just five innings over the UTSA Roadrunners on Friday evening, April 12. NM State improves to 28-14 this season and now sits a on a nine-game win streak in Western Athletic Conference play.
Sophomore Staci Rodriguez worked her way into the Aggie record book with her 14th and 15th home runs of the season, good enough to tie for fourth in program history. Her two rockets along with a solo shot by senior Amber Olive lifted NM State to the run-rule win.
Rodriguez went 2-for-2 on the day with a walk in the first inning and had five RBI. Olive’s bomb was No. 2 this season and her lone hit of the evening.
“I thought we came in really focused got our offense moving early,” associate head coach Cat Heifner said. “I know UTSA is a very good team and they are going to come out fighting tomorrow and we’ll just have to be ready for that.”
NM State kept the Roadrunners out of scoring position throughout and allowed just one hit off of right handed hurler Alex Newman. The senior had one strikeout and did not allow a walk through her five complete innings. Newman picked up her fifth win in league play and moves to 16-8 this season in the circle.
NM State plated the first run of the day as UTSA’s pitcher Haylee Staton walked three Aggies in a row after letting Kelsey Dodd on base with her 10th double of the season to open the game.
NM State allowed four Roadrunners to reach first base during the game, but they were never moved past first base as second baseman Tehani Kaaihue and shortstop Teresa Conrad teamed up to stop the runners from advancing.
NM State was scoreless in the second, but came out with a two-run bomb by Rodriguez, her first of the day, to score herself and Dodd after the sophomore was walked on base. A single by junior Alyssa Ruiz in the same inning was deep enough in the gap between short and left field to score Kaaihue after she walked on base.
Olive opened the bottom half of the fourth inning with her solo shot over the left field fence. She started the rally for the Aggies as a walk and a single by Conrad put two runners on base to bring Rodriguez back to the plate. She went yard for the second time in the game for three more RBI, giving the Aggies an 8-0 lead and the win.
