El Paso, T.X. -- The UTEP cheerleaders finished in the nation's top five for the third year in a row, placing third at the NCA National Championship on April 11-12 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Miners stood tall against a field of 14 elite schools, as Michigan won the title and James Madison was runner-up.
UTEP captured the national championship in 2011 and notched fifth place in 2012. UTEP, Michigan and James Madison have all landed in the top five for the past three years, and this year only tenths of a point separated the three squads.
The Miners will be conducting tryouts for the 2013-14 team, as well as for mascot Paydirt Pete, on April 27. For more information, please contact coach David Vasquez at 747-5046 or visit the tryout website at ica.utep.edu/cheer.
