The FDA plans to complete a long-awaited safety review of a common active ingredient in antibacterial products this year. It will also look at whether the chemical actually works.
Triclosan has been used in products like antibacterial soap for more than 40 years.
The FDA says the chemical is not currently known to be hazardous to human health, but it says several scientific studies have come out since its last review that merit another look.
The agency says animal studies have shown the ingredient changes hormone regulation and it also says other studies have raised the possibility it contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
