CANUTILLO, TX (KTSM) — The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday said it finalized its contract with incoming Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galavíz, and established a timeline for his entry into the school district.
Dr. Galavíz, the director for secondary schools in the Round Rock Independent School District, will officially begin his tenure in Canutillo on June 3. He is expected to spend some time in the District next week to get acquainted with key staff members and begin drafting his plan of action for Canutillo ISD.
“The Board is excited to be moving forward in such a positive manner, and we are ready to welcome Dr. Galavíz into the CISD Family,” said Board President Armando Rodriguez. “We are confident that his transition into CISD will be a smooth one, and that the impact he will have in our students will be felt for a long time.”
The Board on Tuesday approved a 3-year contract for Dr. Galavíz and set his salary at $171,000.
Dr. Galavíz, according to CISD officials, is seen as an up-and-coming educator in Texas with a strong record of high performance in schools with large numbers of minority students. As an elementary- and high-school principal in the Dallas Independent School District, he oversaw achieved unprecedented academic attainment for students in campuses that previously suffered from chronic low test scores.
In Round Rock, he administered 14 secondary schools — 13 of which were rated exemplary or recognized by the Texas Education Agency. Three of his schools were among the best public schools in the country according to the U.S. News & World Report magazine.
