Socorro, TX (KDBC) — The three new members of Socorro City Council took the oath of office Thursday night in front of a crowded room of Socorro residents.
Socorro Mayor Jesus Ruiz, Rene Rodriguez, Representative at Large, and Joseph "Chito" Bowling, District 4 Representative received a standing ovation.
After being sworn in, Ruiz spoke about his plans for the embattled town. Plans that include being more available to residents.
"We want to reassure them that they are able to speak to us, whether it be positive or negative, and we just want to reach out to them, make ourselves available to the public and let them know that their leaders are here for them," said Ruiz.
Ulyses Gutierrez lives in Socorro and said he is ready for change.
"The last city council we had, they were doing a lot of things behind our backs, many of them got indicted, they even got in trouble. We're just tired if it. We're tired of the corruption," said Gutierrez.
Another top priority is to increase transparency, which the new council hopes to accomplish by posting agendas and financial documents online, as well as streaming council meetings online.
First, they plan to begin with an audit.
"I think our first priority is to call an audit. We need to see where our financial state is," said Rodriguez.
El Paso County Commissioner Vince Perez agrees that it is a good place to start.
"Ordering an audit is a wise thing to do. I believe to make sure they get a good picture of how the finances of the City of Socorro are," said Perez.
Commissioner Perez said he will help the new council should they ask for it.
