El Paso, TX — The UTEP football team is in final stages of a contract negotiation to move their summer preseason practice to Alpine, according to the UTEP athletics department. UTEP has spent the previous 14 seasons in Socorro, New Mexico, with the final eight under head coach Mike Price. The move to Alpine does not have anything to do with the coaching change. New head coach Sean Kugler said that the team could not hold preseason camp there this year due to a scheduling conflict.
Silver City, New Mexico was also a potential site, but UTEP hopes to have their camp at Sul Ross State's Jackson field this summer. Players will report on August 8, and camp is scheduled from August 9-20.
The agreement is in principle only right now, but Alpine city council members spoke to the Alpine Avalanche newspaper, and said they hope to have a three year contract in place, and would be great exposure for Alpine and Sul Ross State.
