(CNN) — Great news for the 10-year old Philadelphia girl who underwent a lung transplant June 12th.
A spokesperson for the family tells CNN that Sarah Murnaghan is awake.
The young girl who has cystic fibrosis remains on a ventilator making it unable for her to talk, but she is nodding yes and no to questions, indicating she understands what's being asked.
Prior to Murnaghan's surgery, she was put into a medically induced coma to allow her body needed rest prior to the transplant surgery, so this is the first time her parents have been able to communicate with her since then.
Murnaghan's story made national headlines after her family fought to have young children prioritized for adult organs.
In May doctors told Murnaghan's family she had less than five weeks to live.
At that time, Sarah had been on the waiting list for new lungs for 18 months.
