In honor of World Breastfeeding Month, the city's WIC Program is organizing various activities in August to raise awareness of breastfeeding benefits.
This August, Texas WIC, along with the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, honor peer counselors with the World Breastfeeding Month theme Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers. The Peer Counseling program is mother to mother support that has been proven to be one of the most successful approaches to encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies.
More than 3,500 mothers have been trained as Breastfeeding Peer Counselors in Texas, 32 trained locally since the program began in April of 1991. Approximately 450 Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are working in WIC local agencies in Texas with 11 currently employed by the Department of Public Health WIC Program.
