Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State women’s tennis team opens the fall tournament season by hosting the 2013 edition of the Aggie Invitational, Sept. 13-15, at the NM State Tennis Center.
The three-day flighted tournament gets started on Friday, Sept. 13 at 9 a.m. (MT), and is set to include nine teams and more than 60 student-athletes. NM State welcomes rivals UTEP and New Mexico as well as Northern Arizona, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, Western New Mexico, University of Arizona and Western Athletic Conference opponent Grand Canyon.
Abilene Christian ended the 2013 spring season ranked No. 5 in the ITA Division II rankings, while Grand Canyon finished ninth and Tarleton State ended the 2013 season ranked No. 28. This is the first season the ACU and GCU will compete as DI programs.
NM State finished the injury-riddled 2013 season 8-16 with two conference wins. The Aggies fell to NAU in early spring of 2013, but came back for three consecutive home victories over WNMU, TSU and I-10 rival UTEP.
Each of the 10 Aggies on the 2013-14 roster will compete during the course of the weekend. NM State brings back five returners from the 2012-13 roster, including seniors Ros-Polly Nguyen and Annemieke Witte. As a junior, Nguyen led the Aggies with a 12-5 singles record during the spring. She also worked for a five-match winning streak in the middle of the season and helped the Aggies pick of their first conference win of the season over Seattle U.
The Aggies also welcome five newcomers to the squad: Susana Alcaraz (Aguascalientes, Mexico), Brittany Collens (Manchester, Mass.), Chloe Jolliff (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), Gabrille Joyce (Roswell, N.M.) and Marie-Pier Thiffault (Quebec, Canada).
Each day of the tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. (MT), at the NM State Tennis Center. For more information on the Aggie women’s tennis program, visit www.nmstatesports.com .
