El Paso, TX (KDBC) — A little league football team is grieving the loss of one of their parents. But in the midst of the pain of losing a loved one, the Northeast Raiders are also coming together.
Valerie Smith passed away in early October. She suffered a heart attack while she was watching her teenage twin boys play football at the Northeast Regional Park then died days later.
Family and friends have placed an empty pink chair on the field, dedicating it to the mother of two.
Since her passing, the chair has been placed there to mark Smith's presence at the games.
The Northeast Raiders are now pulling together to raise funds to help with funeral costs. Even though Valerie Smith is gone, the Smith family said they've been able to deal with the sudden loss because of their Raiders family.
"I'm still surrounded by family. That's what she did; she made all of us families, friends, and everything. We're not alone in this situation. We have family here,” Malcolm Smith, Valerie’s husband told us.
Malcolm and Valerie Smith's teenage twin boys both play on the team -- they're numbers 2 and 45.
If you want to help out the family, the Raiders team has setup an account with Wells Fargo under Valerie Smith. The account number is 2115681567.
