El Paso, TX (KDBC) — The Borderland is home to hundreds of unemployed veterans, but after Thursday, dozens are one step closer to finding a job.
The veteran's unemployment rate in El Paso is at 16%, and Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande tried to lower that number by hosting a job fair on Thursday at the El Paso County Coliseum.
A total of 91 employers and 1,148 veterans filled the coliseum looking for work at the "Red, White and You" job fair.
Some 1500 jobs were up for grabs in industries like construction, technical and law enforcement.
Employers and event organizers were impressed with the turnout.
"We're very excited that we're able to help and be a part of supporting our military," said Rosa Flores with Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande.
Veterans who spoke with Local4News said they appreciate the work that went into helping them try to land a job.
"It saves me time, it puts all the places in one location, and I can gather as much information as I can, in as little as time as possible," said Crystal King.
"It's helpful as far as the information, the one-on-one contact, the experience with the actual employers," said Henry Flores.
A total of 224 interviews were scheduled and 4 people were hired on the spot at the job fair.
