El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — The El Paso Chihuahuas were the talk of baseball’s annual Winter Meetings this week in Orlando, Florida. The buzz surrounding Triple-A Baseball’s newest team included an appearance on MLB Network. (The MLB Network feature mentioning Chihuahuas caps is available here - http://bit.ly/1kEfUaM )
“The reaction at the Winter Meetings confirms what we envisioned – a fun, exciting brand,” said Chihuahuas’ General Manager Brad Taylor. “I couldn’t walk 20 feet there without someone in the baseball industry stopping me to ask about our new logos.”
The Winter Meetings attention coincided with growing merchandise sales. The Chihuahuas’ team shop, which has been open less than two months, has shipped orders to six foreign countries (American Emirates, Canada, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico) and 47 states. “We are missing Hawaii, North Dakota and Vermont,” added Taylor. “If El Pasoans know anyone in these states, let’s urge them to hop on the Chihuahuas’ bandwagon so our city becomes represented in all 50!”
The Chihuahuas’ digital popularity is also soaring, with more than 25,000 Facebook “Likes.” With a Facebook page that has been active less than two months, the Chihuahuas already have more “Likes” than 12 of the 16 Pacific Coast League teams.
The Chihuahuas grabbed the attention of both Minor League and Major League staffs while in Orlando. The San Diego Padres, El Paso’s Major League affiliate, spoke enthusiastically about their new Triple-A team at the annual Padres Winter Meetings Reception. Executives across the PCL were thrilled to hear about the passionate fan base developing in El Paso. Several vendors at the Winter Meetings Trade Show displayed Chihuahuas’ baseballs, bats, clothing, inflatables, print materials and many other promotional items.
“It was so amazing to be on the other side of the country in Orlando and hear leaders in the baseball industry speak so highly of my hometown of El Paso and the El Paso Chihuahuas. It made me so proud,” said Becky Lee, the Chihuahuas’ Director of Corporate Partnerships.
