The El Paso Chihuahuas are set for their opening home game in two months. The original date has already been pushed back to April 28th and contractors are working hard to meet the new deadline.
About 75 % of the construction is complete and the ballpark is beginning to take on its unique appearance. That is something the park engineers and officials say they are particularly proud of.
:El Paso is going to have one of the coolest baseball parks in the entire country," said Chihuahuas General Manager Brad Taylor.
The nearly $60 million baseball stadium will seat more than 7,000 fans.
"I can tell you, if you are sitting on the row closest to the concord, farthest from the field, you are still right on top of the action," said Taylor.
In addition to the fixed seats, there will be space for standing room and tables to eat at. The stadium also has several concession stands, and more than 20 places for mobile food and souvenir carts.
With most of the heavy work done, like pouring concrete and steel placement, contractors can now focus on the details.
One of the things architects and engineers keep on saying is as soon as the stadium is complete, and you walk into the stadium for the first game, you're going to know you are in El Paso’s ballpark.
"When the architects got here, they were immediately taken by the train station, the old Burnham depot,” said Ballpark Engineer Alan Shubert. “It's a beautiful iconic architectural structure."
The first things you will notice, even before entering the ballpark, is the red brick on the outside.
And when you enter the stadium, the steel supporting the structure is meant to look like an old train station platform, with round bolts to try and give it an old time look.
"The idea is to make this thing look like it belongs in this city," said Shubert.
Which is something ballpark officials hope fans appreciate.
"I say now's the time El Paso. You're on the map with a lot of other cities that have something like you deserve and now you get it," said Taylor.
Park engineers say the grass is one of the next big projects. It is going to be laid down in about a month.
