The Department of Homeland Security is dropping the idea of creating a national database of license plates. The idea was to bring in images of license plates scanned by speed cameras, then store them.
Officials thought it would help track undocumented immigrants, but it raised questions about privacy. Privacy advocates were concerned that innocent people could be caught in dragnets.
The DHS issued a statement saying, "The solicitation, which was posted without the awareness of ice leadership, has been canceled."
