LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Mayfield Head Basketball Coach Tommy Morrow said he is extremely humbled by the support from the community after losing his home to a fire Friday night.
Morrow said he rushed home after his team had won a district championship game and and found his home completely gutted by the fire.
"You'll hear the term 'Mayfield family' and we are experiencing that in a big way," Morrow said. "It's been unbelievable."
Doña Ana County firefighters responded to Riverwood Road near Mayfield High School within ten minutes at around 10 p.m. and nobody was home at the time.
Firefighters were able to control the fire but the home is a total loss.
Morrow said the parents of his team organized a car wash over the weekend and collected about $5,000.
"People are coming and are putting money in our pockets putting clothes on our back cause we literally have nothing."
Rival Las Cruces High School also plans to collect money for the coach's family at their game Tuesday afternoon from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Donations are also being collected online.
