El Paso, TX — UTEP's Vince Hunter was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week for the second straight time, and the third time in four weeks, on Monday. It marks his league-leading fifth honor this season.
Hunter tied his career-high with 26 points at Southern Miss and averaged 19.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg for the week as UTEP split two games. The Miners won at Tulane 72-54 and lost to the Golden Eagles 77-68. Hunter tallied 12 points and seven rebounds versus the Green Wave. He shot 5-for-7 from the field in 26 minutes. He was 8-for-11 from the floor and 10-for-15 from the line at Southern Miss while tying his career high with five assists. In the two games Hunter shot 72.2 percent (13-for-18) from the field and 63.2 percent (12-for-19) from the line.
Hunter is the third player to earn C-USA Freshman of the Week honors five or more times since the award’s inception in 2011. Tulane’s Ricky Tarrant was a seven-time winner in 2011-12 and Rice’s Max Guercy was a five-time recipient in 2012-13.
The Miners (20-8, 10-3 C-USA) will host Tulsa (15-12, 10-3 C-USA) in a crucial C-USA game on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. They will wear Texas Western jerseys on "Throwback Night," and seniors John Bohannon and Tyler Tafoya will be honored. Thursday's halftime show features appearances by Miner legend Marlon Maxey and Philadelphia Eagles long snapper and former UTEP player Jon Dorenbos.
