El Paso, TX — Senior forward Kayla Thornton finished with 23 points Saturday night in a 81-74win over East Carolina, which was a physical contest that saw several technical fouls assessed in the final minutes, one on an ECU player which caused Thornton to fall hard and hit her head on the floor. Thornton finished the game but collapsed in the Haskins Center tunnel, and was rushed to the hospital to be cared for. Thornton was at practice today but did not participate.
UTEP officials released this statement regarding the status of Wednesday night's senior night home game against UT San Antonio.
"Kayla Thornton is improving but she has not yet been cleared to return to the basketball court. Once the doctors have given Kayla the green light, we will be sure to let you all know. Thank you to everyone for all of their support and concern," said UTEP basketball head coach Keitha Adams.
It was a physical contest that featured a combined 49 fouls while featuring 11 ties and seven lead changes, with the teams trading runs throughout. The Pirates (21-5, 9-4 C-USA) led 60-55 with 6:17 to play before Willingham and Thornton powered the home side to seven straight points.
UTEP is now 21-5, 10-3, and will host UTSA 7:00pm Wednesday at the Haskins Center.
